The Junior School consists of a one-year Kindergarten and Junior 1 to Junior 6 classes. The Kindergarten, which is the principal entry point to the Junior School, accommodates just over fifty children in a spacious building designed especially for them. The Junior School has a roll of approximately 380 children.
The aim of the school is to provide a happy, caring and safe environment in which each individual child is encouraged to achieve his or her full potential both academically and socially. Pupils are encouraged to develop a sense of responsibility and pursue excellence in all their activities. Pupils benefit from having specialist teachers in Art, Drama, French, Learning Support, Music and Physical Education, and the Junior School also has its own librarian.
A large number of pupils have individual instrumental lessons, and the Junior School has its own orchestra, wind-band and guitar group along with an infant, junior and senior choir. Many of our pupils enjoy sporting success in local and national competitions in a wide variety of sports, and they are also able to participate in a wide range of extra-curricular clubs such as Skiing, Mini-Bridge, Scottish Country Dancing, Tennis and Chess.
The Junior School has its own Head Teacher, Mrs Karen Waugh. Mrs Waugh, who was educated at Hutchesons’ Girls’ Grammar School, gained a Diploma in Primary Education at Jordanhill College and a Bachelor of Arts degree at the Open University. She taught at Carlibar, Crookfur and Torrance Primary before becoming Assistant Head Teacher, Deputy Head Teacher and Acting Head Teacher at Carolside Primary School. She was appointed Head Teacher of Mearns Primary in 1991 and joined the High School, with her two children, in August 2001.
